After reading the raving reviews of Mr Lee Hong Min in the forum, my friend and I decided to engage him as our taxi guide for our Jeju tour on 30 Jun 14 even though the price he quoted was slightly pricier than some of the other taxi guides that we enquired via email. Checking on Mr Lee Hong Min’s availability for our travel date via email was a breeze with his prompt reply. His email turn around time was within a day. After confirming his fee and our places of interest and informing him the details of our flight to Jeju, we confirmed him as our guide. Our choice of guide turns out to be one of the best decision that we have made.
We planned to stay in Jeju for 2 days with the first day engaging a taxi guide to bring us to famous site such as Majjangul Cave, Seongsan Sunrise Peak, Sangumbri Crater, Seopjikoji (lighthouse), Seongeup Folk Village etc. and the second day to trek up hallasan (via public transport ourselves to cut cost). On the day we reach Jeju airport, we saw a young and cheerful Mr Lee holding my name and waiting for us at the airport. He led us to his taxi which is new and clean with Wifi access and our Jeju adventure started. Mr Lee helped us plan the route of the places we want to visit, making sure that we get the most out of our one day guided trip.
Mr Lee is unlike other taxi guides I have engaged. Most taxi guide that I engaged in my traveling experience will drive us to the destination and we will then explore the attraction ourselves while the driver wait in his taxi. However, Mr Lee actually came out of his cab and visited all the places with us. Even if the attraction require lot of walking and climbing of stairs, he will still be around to help with photo taking or explaining/answering Jeju related cultures to us.
When we make impromptu requests such as requesting to have abalone porridge for lunch, wanting to see the female diver performance etc. he will always try his best to fulfil our wishes. We saw him busy making changes to the itinerary calling restaurants to make reservation for us. The restaurant he brought us to have abalone porridge lunch is one that is owed by a female diver which serves good abalone porridge. We will probably never find that place if not brought by a local.
Mr Lee is a sincere, humorous and attentive taxi guide. He is willing to go to the extra miles to help his customer. He knew that the next day we need to go to the bus terminal to take bus to Hallasan ourselves. Even though by the time after our tour, it was already late at night and way off the hours we engaged him for (we hired him for 9 hours), he still brought us to the bus terminal and check for us the bus no. and show us which bus deport to take the bus to Hallasan the next day. As we were afraid that we might be very tired after our trek the next day at Hallasan so we checked with him if it was easy to take cab back from Hallasan after our trek. He actually commented that if we were too tired to take a bus back tomorrow we could call him and he could drive us back to our hotel tomorrow since he is available.
We thought it was just a passing remark. However, the next day, after our very tiring trek, we actually got a phone call when we were on our way out of Eorimok trail from Hallsan. Mr Lee came to the rescue! He checked with us where we were and said he will come and pick us at the carpark of Eorimok trail. We were so glad to see him after our trek and get a ride back to the hotel. When we reached our hotel, we asked him how much we owed him but he refused payment. He just said that we could recommend friends his service if they are coming to Jeju. Of course we will! He has been a great guide throughout and took great care of us. He is like a big brother to us! I would definitely engage him again if I am going back to Jeju and highly recommend his services. He could speak English though not very fluently but is comprehensible.
